MAN’S LIFE AND LEGACY
Deacon Harold Washington was born to the late Mr. Burgess Darling Washington and the late Mrs. Lula (Scott) Washington on August 19, 1932. Deacon Harold Washington served in the United States Army for two years.
After serving his country, he married Cathamae Wright. Their thirty-year union was blessed with eight children. After the passing of his wife, he later married Virginia Mitchell. With this twenty-five years union came ten bonus children.
Deacon Washington was a very diligent worker in the church. He became an Ordained Deacon and Trustee at Antioch Baptist Church under the leadership of the late Reverend Alonzo Alston. When Antioch closed, he became a member of Bethlehem Baptist Church, holding the position of Chairman Deacon until his health failed. He also served under the Pastoral leadership of Reverend Joey Jordan and Reverend Williamson at Bethlehem Baptist Church. Deacon Washington also was a faithful member of the Mount Carmel Baptist
Association. In 1965, he joined the Mt. Moriah Lodge No. 15 in Savannah, Georgia. He was honored as a Gold Card and lifetime member, by the Most Worshipful Prince Hall Grand
Lodge of Georgia for his 59 years of service. He was Reverend by the lodge, as their oldest member for years and attended meetings faithfully.
Deacon Washington was employed at the International Longshoreman’s Association Local 1414 until his retirement in 1987. In his spare time he enjoyed farming, fishing, shrimping,
crabbing, hunting and raising hogs. He took delight in sharing his crops, seafood, and fruits during the holidays with the elderly, church members, and family. Most importantly, he enjoyed spending time with his family.
He is preceded in death by his parents; four children, Harry Washington, Luetricia Cooper
Kelson, Marietta Williams, and Edward Lee Washington; four sisters, four brothers; and grandson, Jermaine “Hotdog” Milton.
On Monday, July 1, 2024, Deacon Washington entered into Eternal Rest.
Deacon Washington leaves to cherish his memory: six children, Barbara James, Deerfield, FL,
Ann Marie Mitchell (Benjamin), Ridgeland, SC, Edith Washington Jones (Lewis, III), Savannah, GA, William Washington (Monica), Ridgeland, SC, Leonard Milton, Columbia, SC, and Patricia Milton, Savannah, GA; daughter-in-law, Pamela Washington; brother-in-law, Mr.Eddie Lee Wright; three brothers, John Henry Washington (Brenda), Burgess Washington and James Washington; two sisters, Nancy Simmons and Carolyn Washington; his memory will
also be cherished by the Milton family and friends; and a host of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
Harold Washington 91 passed away July 2, 2024, in Savannah, Georgia at his granddaughter‘s residence.
