Ms. Johnnie Mae Polite, age 75, was born on October 5, 1943, to the late John Polite and Susie Mae (Wright) Blackshear. She entered into eternal rest on September 27 at Hilton Head Hospital after a brief illness. After receiving her formal education from Jasper County High, Class of 1960, she went on to further her education, earning a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration from Savannah State University. After receiving her degree she was employed at several businesses to include U.S Navy, Seagram Company Ltd., several bank institutions, and Wal-Mart. In her younger years she attended Mt. Olive RMUE Church but later became a member of St. Benedict the Moor Catholic Church in Savannah, GA. She served cheerfully on the Council of Catholic Women for many years. Johnnie Mae could easily be deemed a “Social Butterfly” as she never met a stranger. In 1970, Jasper County High Class of 1960 formed a social organization. She served as treasurer until her health failed. They were a civic minded group that formed and supported many charities throughout Jasper County. She was also a member of the Socialite Club. Johnnie Mae enjoyed life and loved to travel. She was preceded in death by her parents and her stepfather John Blackshear. She leaves to cherish her memories: one son, Travis (Letitia) Polite Grant Sr., Hardeeville, SC; two daughters, Chai-Nisse Polite, Savannah, GA, and Natalie (Eric) Gadson, Bluffton, SC.; two sisters, Alice (Eugene) Hicks, Hardeeville, SC, and Deloris Ford Swain, Hardeeville, SC.; eight grandchildren, Ta’Karry, Travis Jr., Cierra, Lynnsie, Jonathan, Ja’Nieca, Kylee and Braylon; Godchildren, Danielle Wright, Kevin Hicks and Terrence Lamar Brown; Devoted friends, Hazel Scott, Venus Robinson, Frances Primus, Thea Frazier, Gloria Small Fenderson, the Jasper County High Class of 1960 and the Socialite Club, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and additional friends.
