Josephine Shemecka Holmes
A humble soul, Ms. Josephine Shemecka Holmes was born on February 13, 1981, the daughter of Joseph Alan Holmes and Hazel Johnson Holmes. Josephine was raised in a loving home in Ridgeland, SC with her parents and siblings. Her free spirit and hard work exuded into her passion for basketball, as she became a basketball phenom while attending Hilton Head Preparatory School and Hilton Head High School. Her hard work paid off because she received a full basketball scholarship to a University in Florida. She continued her education and obtained her Associate’s Degree in Criminal Justice and pursued her career in Criminal Justice while working at the Jasper County Detention Center in Ridgeland, SC. Following her tenure at the Jasper County Detention Center, she pursued various employment opportunities until she found what met her expectations, and that was at Coca-Cola Consolidated. She dedicated much of her time and energy doing the best that she could and working as hard as possible. She instilled this work ethic into her three children.
Josephine lived her life to the fullest and enjoyed everyday with a smile. She enjoyed her family and ensured that her family came first and was never divided. She was a determined and strong-minded young woman, and the family knew that if she set her mind to anything, that it was guaranteed that she would accomplish what she was seeking to accomplish. Josephine was an extraordinarily unique individual and was not a timely person, but on May 27, 2023, God dispatched his angels to bring her home. She went peacefully with the angels and left a legacy. No suffering and no pain, just peaceful rest in the presence of the Lord.
Josephine was blessed with three beautiful children, Ely Shareef Poacher, Imani Diamond Poacher, Nia Princess Poacher. She is survived by the father of her children as well as her children’s paternal grandmother, Juanita Farmer; her two sisters, Kiesha (James) Busby, of Fayetteville, NC, and Tiffany Holmes, of Ridgeland, SC; three uncles, Roosevelt (Linda) Aiken, of Ridgeland, SC, Parris Holmes and Dwane Holmes of Hilton Head Island, SC, seven aunts, Brenda Mitchell and Janis Holmes of Hilton Head Island, SC, Paula Wells (Eric) of Milan, GA, Jeanette Aiken, Ruth Ann Aiken and Debra Duncan of Ridgeland, SC, Patricia (Luther) Bellinger, of Garnett, SC; three great aunts: Irene (Joe) Snooks, of Jacksonville, FL, and Marie Ling Duncan, of Garnett, SC; a great uncle James (Florence) Ling, of Garnett, SC, and special friends, Kevin Alston of St. Helena Island, SC, Kamniel Richardson of Columbia, SC and special cousin Janson Holmes of St. Augustine, Florida.
