Lilar Heyward Obituary

Lilar Mae Heyward, one of 10 children born to the late Eulie and Julia
Duncan, was born September 25, 1929, in Shirley, SC. She departed this
earthly life on Monday, November 27, 2023 at Ridgeland Nursing Center,
Ridgeland, SC after a brief illness.
At an early age, she received Jesus Christ as her Lord and Savior and in her
formative years was an active member at Hopewell CME in Garnett, SC. In
the late 1940s, Lilar Mae met and was later united in holy matrimony to the
late Willie L Heyward. During this marriage, she joined what is now King
Branch Missionary Baptist Church and was an active member, serving on
the deaconess board and in later years, was given the title of “church
mother”. Lilar Mae was a loving and faithful wife for 44 years until the Lord
called her husband home to glory in 1991. During this union, 2 children
were born, Malzo J Heyward and Danna Heyward Sweeper. Eventually,
she returned to her original church home of Hopewell where she was also
recognized as a church mother and faithfully attended until her health
declined. She was also a foster mother for 20 plus years for Hampton
County Department of Social Services. It was her belief that all a child
needs is “good tentions” to thrive and be successful. In fact, she was a moth-
er to all who needed it, having helped raised/ “kept” numerous children of
family members over the years when needed. Lilar Mae was known for her
authenticity, her cooking (especially stewed chicken, sweet potato bread,
collard greens, and biscuits) her pride of maintaining a clean home, and her
sharp sense of humor. She was a fearless truth teller and showed her love by
telling the people she cared about what they needed to hear and not what
they wanted to hear.
…Favour is deceitful, and beauty is vain;
but a woman that feareth the Lord, she shall be praised.
She was preceded in death by her parents, 6 brothers: Lacy, Frank, Walter,
Norman, Johnny, and Edward; and 3 sisters “Gertie”, Florence, and “Liz”.
She leaves to cherish fond memories: one son Malzo Heyward, Garnett
SC; one daughter Danna Sweeper, Winston-Salem NC; one son-in-law
Donald E. Sweeper; one brother, Gene Decausey, Raleigh, NC; 3 sisters-in-
law, Marie Duncan, Garnett, SC, Carolyn Grant and Barbara Ann Grant,
both of Springfield, MA; 2 brothers-in-law; Marion (Gwen) Garvin and
Randolph Wallace, both of Baltimore, MD; 8 grandchildren: Jocelyn
Heyward, Marcia Heyward, Maria Heyward, all of Columbia, SC, Michele
Heyward, Denmark, SC, Tyrone Heyward, Waxhaw, SC, Donald T Sweeper,
Dorian Sweeper, and Devin Sweeper, all of Winston-Salem, NC, 5 great
grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
